Dr.Schwartz
Areas of Interest
Dr. Schwartz
focuses his work on two principal branches of neurosurgery.

One of his prime areas of expertise is the surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders. These include cervical, thoracic, and lumbar disc problems, and cord compression or stenosis issues. His broad-based approach offers a variety of options for treatment before surgery is undertaken.

The second major area Dr. Schwartz pursues is the treatment of brain tumors, particularly gliomas, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas. Tumors are comprehensively treated in the context of the total patient. Surgery, radiosurgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are all considered when planning the treatment protocol.

Education, Training, and Qualifications
Dr. Schwartz received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine. After an internship in medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center, his career as a surgeon began when he started a neurological surgery residency at The George Washington University Medical Center.

He was commissioned as a Major in the Medical Corps of the US Army. It is a testament to his talent that at an early point in his career he served as Chief of Neurosurgery at the Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, Georgia. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding meritorious service as a neurosurgeon.

After his military service Dr. Schwartz turned his career toward private practice and teaching. In 1979 he was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. In the past quarter-century he has performed more than 4000 neurosurgical operations.

Academic Service
Dr. Schwarz believes deeply that part of a physician’s role is to pass on the knowledge he has gained through years of experience—knowledge that can’t readily be imparted through books and computers. To do this, he has taught neurosurgery to doctors and medical students at prominent institutions.
